Unit 1 · Chapter 1 — Concept of Growth & Development
1.1 What is Growth?
Growth refers to the quantitative increase in the physical dimensions of the body — height, weight, size of organs, and so on. It is measurable, observable, and generally ceases after a certain biological age. Growth is largely governed by genetic factors, though environmental conditions like nutrition and health play a significant supporting role.
In the context of BEd pedagogy, understanding growth is foundational because it forms the physical scaffolding upon which psychological and cognitive development rests.
1.2 What is Development?
Development is a broader, qualitative concept. It refers to progressive changes in size, shape, and function that make an individual better adapted to the environment. Unlike growth, development continues throughout the lifespan and encompasses physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and moral dimensions.
Key characteristics: continuous, orderly, sequential, individual in rate, influenced by both heredity and environment.
