What Can You Do After BEd? — Government Jobs, Private Schools, Salary & Next Steps in 2026

A BEd degree is one of the most versatile teaching qualifications you can hold in India. Whether you want a stable government job, a career in a reputed private school, a role in coaching and education technology, or a path into research and academia — BEd opens all of these doors. The key is knowing which doors exist, what they require, and how to approach them strategically.

Path 1 — Government School Teacher (Most Sought After)

The most common goal for BEd graduates is a government school teaching post. In India, teaching in government schools requires clearing a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) — conducted at the state level — and in many cases a formal recruitment exam conducted by the state or central government.

State TET (for state government schools)

Every Indian state conducts its own TET. For Uttarakhand graduates, this is the UTET (Uttarakhand Teacher Eligibility Test). The UTET qualifies you to apply for state government school posts in Uttarakhand. Paper 1 qualifies you for Classes 1–5; Paper 2 for Classes 6–8.

CTET (for central government schools)

CTET, conducted by CBSE, is required for teaching in Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and other central government schools. It is also accepted as eligibility by many state governments, making it highly transferable.

Expected Government Teacher Salary (2026)

LevelPay ScaleApprox. In-Hand (Monthly)
Primary Teacher (PRT) — KVSLevel 7 (₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400)₹50,000 – ₹65,000
Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT)Level 8 (₹47,600 – ₹1,51,100)₹55,000 – ₹70,000
State School Teacher (Uttarakhand)Level 5–7₹35,000 – ₹55,000

Path 2 — Private School Teaching

Private schools — especially CBSE and ICSE affiliated schools — are a significant employer of BEd graduates. Private school salaries vary widely: smaller schools may offer ₹15,000–₹25,000/month, while reputed schools in cities offer ₹35,000–₹60,000/month for experienced teachers.

The advantage of private schools: faster hiring, diverse teaching environments, and often more flexibility in subject specialisation. Many teachers begin in private schools to build experience while preparing for government exams.

Path 3 — Coaching and Tutoring (High Earning Potential)

BEd graduates who are strong in their subject (Maths, Science, Social Studies, Hindi, English) are in high demand in the tutoring and coaching market. Independent tutoring for Classes 6–12 can earn ₹500–₹1,500 per hour depending on location and subject. Building a student base of 15–20 students can generate ₹40,000–₹80,000/month with flexible hours.

Many BEd graduates also move into online tutoring platforms — a market that has grown significantly in the past 5 years.

Path 4 — Higher Studies

Realistic Career Roadmap After BEd

YearRecommended Focus
During BEd (Year 1–2)Clear CTET and/or UTET before graduation if possible — eligibility is available in final year
Post-BEd Year 1Apply to private schools for experience + continue government exam preparation
Post-BEd Year 2–3Target KVS/NVS/state recruitment — these open 1–2 times per year
Parallel trackBuild a tutoring client base for income while preparing for government exams
Most important first step: Clear CTET as soon as you are eligible. A CTET certificate has lifetime validity (as of 2021 Supreme Court ruling) and opens every major government teaching pathway. It is the single most valuable credential you can add to your BEd degree.
